Overtimes had been kind to Air Force until Friday.
Playing in their seventh extra session of the season, the Falcons lost for the first time when Anthony Vincent scored from the high slot with 1:22 remaining to lift Holy Cross to a 3-2 Atlantic Hockey victory at Cadet Arena.
The Crusaders (9-19-2, 7-12-2 AHA) hustled to beat a potential icing call before Vincent’s tally. Holy Cross had all three shots on goal in overtime and an 18-9 edge combined during the third period and OT.
Will Gavin scored his team-high 14th goal and Willie Reim got his ninth for Air Force. Alex Schilling stopped 36 shots for Air Force (11-14-2, 9-10-2).
The Falcons had 4-0-2 mark in overtime games this season prior to Friday.
Holy Cross scored just 3:14 into the game on Jack Ricketts‘ goal, but Gavin evened it up with a wrist shot from the blue line 8 minutes later. The strike continued the sophomore’s torrid play of late. He has points in the past eight games he’s played in, and the Falcons have gone 5-3 in those contests. Half of his goals have come in the past six games he’s played.
Freshman Clayton Cosentino picked up the primary assist on Gavin’s goal and extended his points streak to five games in the process.
Reim gave the Falcons their only lead when he struck 1:39 into the third period, but Holy Cross captain Matt Slick tied matters 7 minutes later.
Goaltender Erik Gordon made 36 saves for the Crusaders.
Notes: The teams wrap up their series Saturday at 5 p.m. … Air Force had a five-minute power play early in the second period but could not capitalize. Neither team scored on either of its two man advantages.
