Air Force got goals from four different players and held off a pesky Arizona State team, 4-3, on Friday night at Glendale, Ariz., to remain undefeated (2-0-1).
Ben Kucera scored for the third game in a row, and Phil Boje, Kyle Haak and Matt Serratore added goals for the Falcons. Tyler Ledford had two assists, and Kucera added one to give the top line five points. Boje also had an assist.
“Arizona State works and competes really hard,” Coach Frank Serratore told 1300 AM after the game. “We still have a long way to go to find some consistency. Give our guys credit for finding a way to get it done.
“We never trailed, but we never pulled away either. It’s great that we are finding a way to win close games. Teams either find a way to win close games or lose them and we are gaining some confidence in winning close games.”
Shane Starrett made 27 saves for Air Force.
“We relied on Shane a little too much again tonight and again he was the difference in the game,” Serratore said.
Air Force had leads of 1-0, 2-1, 3-1 and 4-2 before ASU scored with 8:13 left for the final margin.
The Falcons accomplished two of the goals their coach emphasized this week:
- First, they limited the Sun Devils to 30 shots (down from 49 against Ohio State on Saturday).
- Second, continued their perfect penalty-killing streak, keeping ASU off the board on all three of their man advantages.
However, the Falcons also could not capitalize on their six power plays.
The teams meet again Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in a game televised on Pac-12 Network.
