Air Force will play Ohio State for the Ice Breaker Tournament championship at 4 p.m. Saturday at Magness Arena.
Here are three things to watch for:
Similar formulas
Ohio State, much like Boston College, plays with speed and skill. The difference is the Buckeyes are much more experienced than BC. Air Force did a good job keeping BC’s offense to the outside and shutting down line rushes. It will need to follow suit tonight. The Buckeyes also played with a lot of tenacity against Denver, something else the Falcons must match, and did in the third period against BC.
Special teams
The Falcons’ penalty kill was exceptional on Friday night, and given OSU’s speed they probably will be forced to rely on it at times. The Buckeyes had several stretches of outshooting DU on Friday by wide margins and penalties typically resulted. However, OSU also took quite a few penalties and was involved in numerous after-whistle scrums. Discipline and an effective power player would negate that.
Altitude
DU coach Jim Montgomery commented after his team’s loss that it appeared the Pioneers were the visitors to Denver, not Ohio State. Can the Buckeyes recover after a late game last night for an afternoon game today? It might be cliche to ask that, but at some point Air Force’s depth and familiarity with the altitude should become an advantage.
